Over half of the world’s population is on social media, yet there are only a handful of companies controlling the majority of the most popular social media platforms. Meta, the tech giant formerly known as Facebook, owns four of the five most widely used platforms alone.
Visual Capitalist has released research overviewing the most popular social networks and the companies that own each platform. Above is a snapshot of the top 4 platforms by Meta which sees a combined total of 7.5 billion monthly active users. The only top five platform not owned by Meta is YouTube, which sees 2.3 billion monthly active users and over 30,000 hours of newly uploaded content every hour.
Why This Matters
The average internet user spends 2.5 hours on social media each day. There is no denying that social platforms are an effective way to reach your audience, but as with all media vehicles, we need to understand who can be reached where. Understanding which platforms have the highest monthly active users is vital for any social media strategy to ensure you are delivering your message across the proper platforms to reach your target audience.
