Doubt Isn’t Always a Sign of Spiritual Drift

Faith Trends

New research from Barna Group and Christ In Youth suggests spiritual engagement does not always make faith simpler for teens.

Among “Faith-Activated” teens (those highly engaged across areas such as spiritual practices, service, and faith integration), 44% feel tension between their faith and what friends or culture expect of them, compared to 27% of teens overall.

They are also more likely to struggle with connecting their beliefs to everyday situations.

Why This Matters

Attendance and participation only tell part of the discipleship story. A teen can be showing up, serving, and growing spiritually while still experiencing doubt or tension.

This doesn’t necessarily mean their faith is weakening, but may instead be because they have more questions due to taking their faith seriously.

In these situations, ministries should avoid interpreting difficult questions as disengagement or rush to resolve them too quickly. Young people need trusted leaders who will help them explore the chasm between what they believe, what they experience, and what the culture around them expects.

In fact, making room for honest questions may be one of the most important ways a ministry helps faith take root in a young life.

Next Steps

Consider how your organization responds when young people express doubt or struggle:

  • Does your content acknowledge doubt and questions?
  • Are leaders and volunteers equipped to discuss difficult subjects?
  • Do young people feel they can be honest without being judged?

A generation taking faith seriously needs ministries willing to take its questions seriously too.
