New Study: Understanding Gen Z

Social Trends

The tension between Gen Z and Boomers is well documented, especially in the workplace now that this generation is entering the workforce.

You’ve heard it before: Gen Zer’s say Boomers are overly critical and old fashioned. Boomers say Gen Zer’s are selfish and don’t want to work.

As Christians working in ministry, it’s in our best interest to find ways to build bridges between these generational divides—but how, when our values seem to be so different?

Young Life has released The Relate Project 2024, a research study aiming to offer a deeper understanding of Gen Z so “older generations can find renewed hope and take meaningful action.”

The study surveyed more than 7,200 adolescents born between 1997 and 2012 about their relationships with themselves, their peers, adults, and God.

Gen Zer’s most common questions? Am I enough to be loved? Do I have something to offer the world?

Why This Matters

People in Gen Z want to be known as kind and good people. They believe they can make a meaningful impact on the world for future generations.

Here are some key findings from The Relate Project 2024:

• 50% of respondents are stressed by school and finances
• 40% of respondents are concerned about mental health
• More than 40% of respondents don’t feel worthy of being loved
• More than 33% of respondents turn to social media when they’re feeling anxious

Despite being a generation raised with the most connection points of any other in history, face-to-face time and shared life experiences are still the most important relationship-building activities for those in Gen Z.
