New Study: Bridging Perspectives on AI

Media Trends

By now it seems clear that artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t going anywhere, but how enthusiastic should we be about this technological tool?

A recent Pew Research Center study explores the gap between how AI experts and the U.S. public view AI, revealing both optimism about its potential and concerns over its societal impacts.

As you may expect, AI experts are generally open to and excited about advances in AI while others are more hesitant and wonder if AI will have a positive or negative impact on our lives.

The survey highlights differences in expectations, perceived risks, and trust in various AI applications, offering a comprehensive look at attitudes toward this transformative technology.

Why It Matters

These are important insights for anyone working in ministry to be aware of, since understanding the divergent views of AI will help leaders anticipate challenges, address fears among staff and stakeholders, and position their organizations to leverage AI’s advantages ethically and responsibly.

While 73% of AI experts surveyed say AI will have a very or somewhat positive impact on how people do their jobs over the next 20 years, that share drops to 23% among U.S. adults.

Concerns range from job displacement and privacy threats to the spread of misinformation.

Next Steps

Here are a few tips for utilizing AI in the workplace while still exercising caution.

  1. Education: Host a workshop or share resources to align your staff’s understanding of AI capabilities and limitations
  2. Assessment: Identify areas in your operations (such as donor communications, volunteer coordination, or content brainstorming) where AI tools can improve efficiency
  3. Guidelines: Create ethical standards for AI usage, ensuring transparency, data privacy, and human oversight
  4. Policies: Stay informed on AI policy and best practices to adapt strategies as the technology evolves
