Giving Trends
Did you know that almost half of the Gen Z generation who support charitable causes believe people should share about their donations online to help spread the word and inspire others to give?
In fact, 41% say a piece of content is what motivated them to investigate a nonprofit.
This is in sharp contrast to 8.5% of Boomers, 20% of Gen Xers, and 24% of Millennials who say they too would be motivated to give based on a social media post.
How people choose to support charities is always interesting, and as technology changes the different ways people show their commitment is broad.
Recently, GoFundMe released the results of a survey studying the way supporters from different generations choose to give, share, and interact with causes they care about.
In general, people give for the same reasons:
- They believe it’s the right thing to do
- Supporting makes them feel good
- The mission resonated with them
However, once someone donates to a charity what they do next varies widely, and it often is related to which generation they’re part of.
Why This Matters
Understanding what motivates someone to give, how they prefer supporting an organization, and what causes them to engage will help you provide content and resources that your donors relate to and respond best to.
While many donors give for similar reasons, how they give and what motivates them can be quite different based on factors such as their age and comfort with technology.
