Message in a Song

Join Me on a Musical Journey for 2025!

I know I’m not alone when I say I love music. But I really love music! My Birkman profile gave me a score of 96 out of 99 for interest in music! (Feel free to ask me about Birkman!). I’ve been a “wanna-be” singer since I was a child, and I’ve listened to music in all the ways available over the decades. Records, tapes, cassettes, 8-tracks, CD’s, digital playlists, and live concerts.

Music speaks to my soul. Lyrics shout messages and melodies stir my emotions. This universal language has blessed most people throughout their lives, and I’m amazed that talented musicians and artists can create new songs every year.

I enjoy most genres, but not the “extremes”! Don’t go too highbrow in classical or scream too loud in rock! I grew up with parents who played music in our home, and 78’s introduced me to the likes of Glen Miller, The Mills Brothers and Harry James. Anyone remember Tiajuana Brass?!

And now I’m old enough to have enjoyed music from the past 7 decades (I taught guitar as a teenager so I could afford to buy albums)! I have never been able to touch music, but music has touched me.

Every year, I identify a word that I am going to focus on and keep a journal of thoughts that come to mind related to my word. This word isn’t more important than any other and this practice isn’t adopted by all, but for me, it has been a very special habit that has led me to understand new things about a particular word and its meaning. Every December, I ask God to lead me to a word and I could write a book about the way in which He has directed me each year to what He wants me to focus on with some intensity for a period. I never have any doubt what the word should be, and this year was no exception.

MUSIC”!

What a strange word in some ways. Did God want me to change it to “HARMONY”? I work hard to keep harmony in my life, and I value a harmonious atmosphere at work and in my home. In fact, this matters to me more than others. But, no, I think the word should be MUSIC and so I’m embarking on a musical journey for 2025.

Every day, I am going to choose one song and record the lyrics and put a link to the song in my journal. I know I will be drawn to the right song each day and I’m excited about where this is going to take me. I want to meditate on the words and the melodies; appreciating the creative expression intended by the songwriter and think about how the song applies to me. What can I learn from this journey of reflection and discovery.

I invite you to send me your song suggestions! I’d love to hear your favourites or even just songs that have meant something to you. I suspect I will collect 365 songs from various eras, genres and some will make me laugh and some will make me cry.

As a lover of communication, I know music will speak to me in new ways this coming year. Feel free to join me on this journey!

Songs mean different things to us at different stages of life. They often have a unique message for each person. You can be sure the music will enrich our hearts and souls.
